WAIW | Speak English!!!

Image contains a blue metal penguin with a white belly and an open mouth. Behind the penguin, there is grass, palm trees, and the ocean in the distance. In the foreground, there is white text that says "Speak English!!!" on the top, and white text that says "Where Am I Wednesday" on the bottom.

I guess it’s been a little long since I last posted one of the WAIW episodes on the blog, but that’s not to say I haven’t been making them. Well, I did miss one week because iMovie decided to get mad with me and the shots I had done were not that great, so I called it quits and went to bed. Outside of that though, if you’re interested in seeing the ones you missed, you can find them all here.

As for this week’s episode, I decided to rant a little about something that has been bothering me for a long time now, and that’s part of why I’m posting it here.

Given the current focus of conversation in the USA and numerous other countries, as well as the general climate I’ve seen while living in Canada, I’ve been bothered by the concept of demanding that people speak English both at home and south of Canada’s border. I’m sure it happens in other English countries as well, and maybe even some that have a dominant language other than English, but in both Canada and the States I feel it’s just one part of a rather large oppressive force to try and get people to be as white as possible.

Obviously, it’s a set-up for failure, and yet the more I travel, the more I see people trying their hardest to learn English and apologizing when they feel it isn’t that great.

So, with that in mind, as well as some seemingly terrible midterm elections results (they’re still not great in my books, even if the dems control the house), I took to talking a bit about just how entitled one has to be to think that everyone else should speak their language.
