As great as it is to have someone like Steve Wynn turn vegan, and then add vegan options to all of his restaurants throughout Las Vegas, it is sad to note that the reason he turned vegan may be a little misleading.

“Eating” DVD Review (vegan.com)

In this honest review it seems Eating goes a little over the top in its praise for veganism. Hopefully we are all aware of the limitations of a vegan diet in regards to such things as replacing medical care, medication, etc… Knowing these limitations, as well as other possible downfalls of veganism, is an important part of understanding one’s choices and why they are the best ones. Simply following the praise of one celebrity or the preaching of a few news articles is not the best way to decide how to live one’s life. So, it’s nice to see that even though Eating has done some good for the vegan world, the folks at vegan.com are willing to look at it with a critical eye.

[Even if vegan.com had not criticized it, the website for the diet it proposes should be enough to raise an eyebrow these days.]

This past summer I wrote about a wonderful announcement by Steve Wynn regarding his hotel chain in Vegas and how they would all now include vegan menu options.

Well, it appears Mr. Wynn is having great success with the changes, and his decision to go vegan has also made quite the impression on his health and his life. Granted, as he admits, he has access to some of the best chefs in the world 24/7, but it seems the change from an omnivorous diet to that of a herbivore led to health benefits even access to some of the best doctors could not have provided.

Steve Wynn: Viva Las Vegan

Sure, this may not come as a surprise to most of us who have been reading about or living the benefits of a vegan diet for some time, but it is nice to see such a thing in a city known for far less healthy activities.

Now, if only I could get them to fly me down there to review their menu…

It seems the change from Vegas being a seedy strip of buffets and greasy food to a culinary hotspot has led to the addition of numerous vegan options on the menus of at least one famous chain.

Mogul Steve Wynn, rumoured to have gone vegan himself, recently announced that every restaurant at his Vegas properties would now offer vegan options. Everything from the buffet to the dessert table will now include animal-free options for those looking to feel good about at least a few of the choices they make in Sin City.

I’ve written before about the slow transition of Veganism into the mainstream, be it simple references in movies or literature or clear notations on menus, but this one is surely a big step in the right direction. Wynn has always been known for being a trendsetter, and some are speculating that this may lead to other local Vegas hotspots adopting the same idea.

Of course, I wouldn’t go placing any bets on the $2.99 midnight steak being replaced anytime soon.
