Plus, it seems the lovely little vegan bakery walked into the house of mouse soon after the restaurant run by a clown was shipped out. Isn’t that just the icing on the cake?

Yes, I had to say it.

“The idea was to capture that whole cycle, and that would enable us to get into some of the realities of dairy farming. Someone who’s following these tweets will know that their cow was sent off.”

Alright, I’m with them on this angle of the project, but I’m not sure of the rest of it. There are some disturbing things brought up in this piece, and the fact that dairy cows end up in McDonald’s trucks shouldn’t be high on that list.

“He thought it was hilarious that he had this new kind of relationship with his cows, because farmers using this (robotic) system are kind of encouraged not to interact with your cows at all anymore,” O’Gorman said.

How much further can we push this system until there is no connection to the animals at all? When farmers are encouraged to avoid interacting with their animals, what else is left? When cattle are tagged to gain entry into automatic milking facilities, and then their “thoughts” are posted on Twitter, how far are we from seeing that a heart beats somewhere in amongst all of this?

Of course, how can we expect this heart to be shown in an industry that thinks the most prominent thought on a cow’s mind would be “eat more chicken”?

“McDonald’s Corp. has agreed to donate $10 million to Hindu and other groups to settle lawsuits filed against the chain for mislabeling french fries and hash browns as vegetarian.”

McDonald’s settles beef over fries

I had never actually read anything on McD’s fries containing beef until now, but for some reason it always seemed to be known amongst my vegan friends that the fries were not vegan. That being said, I can’t say I can think of anything they serve that would be. Here in Canada I believe they flirted with a veggie burger, but it disappeared from the menu quickly. Is there anything else outside of the soft drinks?

On another note, how much would be a reasonable payment for a company that did not disclose all the ingredients to you and led to you eating something that was not vegan? $4,000? I’m not sure if I can come up with a number, but I guess the major point of all of this would be to either be incredibly diligent with your questions or just don’t be surprised if something or another sneaks past you. After all, if you’re eating somewhere that is not specifically vegan or veg* there is a big chance something has touched something else within the run of a day.

Regardless, are there not better fast food choices out there then the clown?

How can one take a job at such a corporation and still enjoy making food? Where is the fun? The “let’s see if this works with our friends” and the overall thrill of taking risks both in the pot and, ultimately, on the plate that goes out the door to the hungry mouths?

Focus groups? Lawyers? Engineers? Give me a few shelves in the fridge filled with Tupperware from the past few days, and a few hungry mouths to feed. That’s all I would want to be a happy chef.
