With a little under a week left in the advertising deadline, I want to make sure I'm not missing a great vegan-friendly business for the new issue.

Hello all,
In May, prior to speaking at the second Vida Vegan Conference in Portland, Oregon, I will be releasing the seventh issue of T.O.F.U. magazine.

Since it started, the magazine has grown a tremendous amount, and I owe so much thanks to all of you for that. So, it should go without saying that I’m excited to get the new issue out to see just how much further it can go!

Before that happens though, I still need to lay it all out, pass it along to a lovely designer friend of mine, and find companies to get onboard with a little financial support.

Although I’ve approached plenty of great businesses so far (thanks to many suggestions by folks on the Facebook page), I figured it wouldn’t hurt to mention it here as well. With the deadline a little under a week away, I’d hate to see some great folks miss out on a chance to advertise what they’re doing.

Not only that, but the more companies I get onboard to advertise, the more I can show support through the T.O.F.U. grant program. If you have not heard about it already, I give half of the advertising income for each issue to a recipient who continues to work on improving the vegan movement in one way or another. Thus, advertising with the magazine supports more than just T.O.F.U., it directly supports a member of the community as well.

So, do you know of any great companies that I should approach? For that matter, are you doing something vegan-friendly that you would like to tell folks about? If so, please feel free to let me know, and, if you’re interested yourself, you can check out the prices and specifications for more info.

thanks,
Ryan

A few years ago, I hit the road with Amanda Rogers and Mike Matta, now known as the Pleasants. In celebration of the release of issue #3, veganism and great music, we travelled from Saint John, New Brunswick across Canada and into the States. Needless to say, there were plenty of interesting stories to come out of our month and a half in a van. Although the tour blogs have been up for some time, I only recently was able to upload higher quality versions to the new T.O.F.U. channel on YouTube.

So, feel free to join me in re-visiting the crazy antics of three vegans on the road.

Well, if you’re still stuck in the grips of winter, or you’re like me and you actually have no closet to clean out, then maybe you can help someone else?

Amanda Rogers from The Pleasants is working on her spring cleaning, and lots of pre-loved clothes have made it to her etsy site:

Recycle My Heart

So, feel free to take a minute to see if anything grabs your attention, and feel good in knowing that it all goes to help keep a musician on the road!

Luckily, amidst all the news on Libya and other world events, I’ve also been coming across things like the video below. So, even if I’m not feeling the most creative at the moment, it is nice to know that some folks close to my heart are out there doing great things. Plus, as recipients of the first T.O.F.U. grant, the Pleasants are yet again giving me a reason to simply eat a good meal and get back on track with the next issue.

As those on the mailing list already know, the switch to digital-only issues has led to a few changes. One of the best things to come out of it is that we can finally start showing support to other people or groups who are working hard to make the world a better place. Known as the T.O.F.U. grant project, the aim is for a large portion of an issue’s advertising income to be presented to one recipient as a thank you for what they do. We hope to eventually open the submissions up to recommendations from readers, but for now we ask that you show your support to the first recipient of the T.O.F.U. grant: The Pleasants.

Those of you who caught the T.O.F.U. tour as we traveled from coast to coast should be no stranger to these two lovely vegans. Although they were billed simply as Amanda Rogers and Mike Matta at that time, the duo has since released an album called Forests and Fields under the name The Pleasants. Described as “Indie Grunge” or “Recession Rock,” they just recently finished up a European tour and are now back in America for the holidays. As two vegans who were nice enough to invite me into their van for a month and a half long journey without having ever met me before the tour, I am happy to be able to support The Pleasants as they provide their audiences with an excellent example of how to make the world a better place not only through their art, but also through the way they live their own lives. In fact, you may also recognize Amanda’s name from the article she wrote about simple living for the third issue. So, if you have a moment, check out their music and drop them a line. Both Amanda and Mike have other albums available through their past endeavours, which means plenty of new music for you!

So, the T.O.F.U. tour is over in the sense that Amanda and Mike are now currently in the van without one Canadian and a pile of magazines. They have a show tomorrow in Long Island, and will no doubt be playing other shows throughout the summer and further on. I recommend you check them out whenever you get a chance, you will not be sorry.

I’m not even sure I could sum up the tour, but I do know it will probably remain one of the best things I’ve done in my life. The memories I have from the people we met, the places we saw, the food we ate, and so many other things are amazing and I never thought I would do so much in the span of a month and a bit.

I’ll try to get more videos up in the coming week, but for now I’m going to take in New York City for all it is, including the rain.
